The article provides information about the emergence and development of the institute for the restoration of lost criminal cases or their materials. Modern problems arising in this regard in the practice of criminal proceedings are noted. The necessity of a detailed regulation of the procedure for the restoration of lost criminal cases and their materials in the current criminal procedure legislation of Russia is substantiated. To this end, it is proposed to introduce an independent chapter 21.1 «Restoration of lost criminal cases and their materials» into the Code of Criminal Procedure of the Russian Federation, which regulates certain aspects of the restoration of lost criminal cases and their materials.
