Currently, transport as a branch of the national economy, acting as a link in the system of economic relations, including those related to the transportation of passengers by rail, is becoming particularly relevant. This is due to a certain degree of accessibility of this type of transport for citizens, safety and convenience of travel. Due to the large passenger traffic, persons with criminal intent are given the opportunity to implement it. As a result of the research, the directions of using special knowledge in the investigation of thefts of personal property committed in passenger rolling stock of railway transport have been developed. The author refers to such areas as: the use of special knowledge by a specialist at the stage of a pre-investigation check on the received report of a crime, the specifics of the inspection of the crime scene in cases of the category in question; the use of special knowledge by an expert during forensic examinations. Each of the areas represents a specific area of practical activity of law enforcement officers, the improvement of which, based on the use of special knowledge, will increase the effectiveness of the investigation of the above category of criminal cases and the process of identifying the person who committed the crime.
