Abstract (English):
Based on the provisions of the modern Code of Criminal Procedure of the Rus-sian Federation, a comparative analysis of the sources of criminal procedure law of certain foreign states, the opinions of procedural scientists and practi-tioners existing in the legal literature, the article comprehensively examines the issue of the assignment of criminal proceedings, analyzes its modern interpreta-tion by the legislature, identifies contradictions in such an interpretation, and justifies the need for the appearance in the Code of Criminal Procedure of the Russian Federation of a purpose and tasks accompanying its achievement in-stead of the existing term "assignment”, despite of its attractiveness. The scien-tific structure of the purpose of criminal proceedings is formulated. It is con-cluded that the purpose and assignment are not the same thing.
