. Based on the analysis of criminal legislation of the pre-revolutionary, Soviet and post-Soviet periods of Russian history, other monuments of Russian law, resolutions of the Plenum of the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation and the RSFSR, the article, examines the history of the development of the institution of protection from life-threatening violence or from the immediate threat of such violence. According to the results of the study, the author came to the conclusion that the institution of necessary defense has undergone many changes, having gone from the right to self-defense, most closely associated with blood feud, to its current position as a natural independent subjective right guaranteed by the Constitution of the Russian Federation.
